The BISON Integrity Check system is available from the Reader Manager and Catalogue Items Manager, as well as from the Circulations system in certain situations.

On entry to the Integrity Checker, the dialog automatically performs all of the checks that it is able to make in the context that it is being used. As a result of the checks, each is listed with a number specifying how many issues where found, along with a checkbox (red cross or green tick) indicating whether a fix should be performed.

Where an issue was found, any check which would delete a record or modify a potentially correct situation, is always defaulted to a red cross. Where it is safe to perform a fix regardless of the situation, or where the fix is always better than the current state, the check will default to a green tick.

To perform fixes, click the [Fix Selected] button - only those rows marked with a green tick will be fixed.

Clicking the [Toggle] button will toggle the current state of all ticks in the list.

Instead of running a fix, it is possible to create a 'To Check' list. The recommended process is to perform whatever fixes are required first, and then create the 'To Check' list in order to reduce the number of items in the list that do not actually require work or investigation.

To-Check lists are useful for manually examining items and readers where the Integrity Checker thinks that there may be an issue.

There are two different types of list that can be created:

• Lists - Lists take the same form as those that you can create in the staff [Search] dialog. Lists are constructed of search criteria and are therefore dynamic in nature. If you display the list, all items or readers that match the criteria of the check at that moment in time are displayed. Lists can be displayed either in the OPAC or by using the Lists search type in the manager dialogs.

• Packages - Packages take the form of Catalogue packages which contain a reference to an actual item which matches the check integrity criteria at the point at which it is run. As the system is not dynamic, no additional items will automatically appear in the results. Packages can be displayed either within the BISON package system, or by using the Packages filtering type in the Catalogue manager dialog.

The Integrity Checker dialog is designed to look for known potential issues with the configuration of catalogue items and readers in the readership and provide an option to correct those issues automatically.

Within the Catalogue Items Manager and Reader Manager checks are made that refer only to that type of record. When used within the Circulations system, a combination of checks are made but which only influence the use of Circulations.

• Item Cores without accessions / Item accessions without cores - Any item in the catalogue consists of two parts (internally to the database) - a Core containing data which is common to all copies of that item, and an Accession which contains unique information regarding a specific copy of the item. High library environments may have multiple Accessions linked to a single core (i.e. multiple copies) while simpler libraries and libraries in primary schools may simply use the system in a 1:1 relationship. In this case, multiple copies of the item will have a single Accession and a single Core for each item. These two checks are designed to find inconsistencies in the system and remove records which are no longer required. CAUTION: The fixes for these integrity checks involve the removal of records.

• Items without a valid media type - This fix adds the default media type to problematic items.

• Items without a valid audience - This fix adds the default audience to problematic items.

• Items without the default audience - This fix adds the default media type to problematic items. Note that not all items may need the default audience, with some items having a special selections. This state may therefore be intended.

• Items without a valid location - This fix adds the default location to problematic items.

• Items without the default location - This fix adds the default media type to problematic items. Note that not all items may need the location, with some items having a special selections. This state may therefore be intended.

• Items without a valid provenance - This fix adds the default provenance to problematic items.

• Readers with loans not in an existing group - This fix assumes that reader not in a valid group are no longer valid, or have left the library. All loans to these readers are automatically returned.

• Readers not in an existing group - This fix assumes that reader not in a valid group are no longer valid, or have left the library. Caution: The fix for this integrity check is to delete the readers.

• Readers without a valid circulations profile - This fix adds the default circulations profile to the problematic readers.

• Readers not in an existing audience - This fix adds the default audience to the problematic readers.

• Readers not using the default profile - This fix adds the default circulations profile to the problematic readers. Note that not all readers may be using the default profile (e.g. staff and special readers) and may need the default profile. This state may therefore be intended.

For all integrity checks results which may be an intended state, it is better to create a dynamic list and investigate the items / readers manually
