The Circulation Profile is the main foundation data item which governs the way in which circulations are permitted for each reader in the readership, and as such provide a number of additional fields:

• Loan Days - governs the normal number of days, unless otherwise overridden elsewhere, over which the reader is permitted to borrow a book.

• Item Limit - the total number of items, unless overridden elsewhere, that the reader is permitted in their possession at any one time.

• Add Closure Days - whether the closure days algorithm should be applied to the Loan Days value above. Under normal circumstances, this should be on regardless of whether Closure Days are in use or not. Leaving the Add Closure Days value turned on without any closure day records defined will have no effect on the circulations.

• Restrict - If turned on, readers assigned to this circulations profile will be prevented from borrowing items from the library. If turned on, readers may still borrow items but only if manually overridden by a suitably authorised staff member at the point of borrowing.

• Media Days Override - provides a means by which a unique value can be assigned to each media type individual to override the core Loan Days value. To change a value, click the number as it appears in the list then change the value in the [Edit] field at the side - changes are written back into the list automatically but the [Update] button must be clicked to write the changes into the database.

At first glance, it may seem that the means to override the number of loan days is duplicated for Media in two locations: both here, and in the Item Media types category. In reality, there is a subtle difference regarding the two systems.

• If a loan duration is overridden in the Item Media types category, the override takes effect for all readers, regardless of Circulations Profile as the override is connected only to the media type.

• If a loan duration is overridden here in the Circulations Profile media overrides section, the override number of days only takes effect for that media type and when the reader has this specific Circulations Profile. As a result, a staff member with a staff profile (for example) could have a longer duration set for text books which would work independently of student profiles.
