Lookup Item Focus

The Focus of any lookup item or group provides a record of what area of Pergamon the item or group is typically used to influence. Sometimes the focus of the item or group is recorded for purely administrative purposes, while at other times the focus has a direct influence.

The following five types of focus have special meaning to the system. If new groups are required to be created locally, care should be taken in order to set the correct focus so that the contents of the group appears where it is expected to be. Setting the focus field incorrectly may result in your application not working.

System

The 'System' focus is used for higher level authoritive lists that are used globally, across the entire application. For example, 'System' based lists are used to build user permissions and application licenses. Typically, 'system' based lookup items will not be created or edited locally by end-users.

Item Indexing

The 'Item Indexing' focus is at the heart of the dynamic indexing system. Any group that is defined as being focused on 'Item Indexing' is automatically displayed in the indexing features of the Item management system.

While a number of standard 'Item Indexing' groups are provided, such as Keywords and Subjects, it is also possible to create other indexing groups that are uniquely required to complement your own requirements for Pergamon.

Item Popup & configuration

Any group that is created with an 'Item Popup' focus is used for one of two purposes: to populate drop-down pick-lists (such as current location or media type), or some other configuration purposes.

While the 'Item Indexing' focus can be set to single-use only, 'Item Popup' is inherently single-use in nature. By far the biggest difference between the two however, is that 'Item Popup' focus groups are typically not dynamic - their use is inherently linked to the established funcationality of the application. No dynamic use is possible.

Reader Indexing

The 'Reader Indexing' focus is identical in nature to the 'Item Indexing' focus type, but in this case for the %Reader and Reader contact areas of Pergamon.

Reader Popup & configuration

The 'Reader Popup' focus is identical in nature to the 'Item Popup' focus type, but in this case for the Reader and Reader contact areas of Pergamon.

MU Users
While Pergamon MU does not utilise the dyanamic indexing system, common lookup groups must still be set to their correct Item Focus values so that the correct mapping can take place into the unified Reader and Catalogue panels. Existing groups and items should not be modified.
